In Central Europe low temperature is limiting soybean growth and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). The BNF efficiency was shown to increase with bradyrhizobia strains selected for their cold tolerance. Significant bradyrhizobia x soybean variety interactions were reported. Co-inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) may promote bradyrhizobia and improve plant phosphorus uptake. The aim of this study is to identify (i) bradyrhizobia showing improved nodulation under cool conditions, (ii) bradyrhizobia x soybean variety and (iii) bradyrhizobia x AMF interactions. In 2011 twelve bradyrhizobia inoculants were tested with three soybean (Glycine max [L.]) varieties under three temperature regimes (14/10°C, 16/12°C, 22/20 °C) in a pot trial. In 2012... |

Waterlogging can reduce crop yield by 20-50% or more, and lack of efficient selection methods is an obstacle in plant breeding. The methods currently used are mainly indices based on germination ability in Petri dishes and leaf chlorosis in plants grown in waterlogged soils. Cultivation in oxygen-depleted nutrient solution is the ultimate waterlogging system. Therefore methods based on root growth inhibition and on fluorescence in plant material hydroponically grown in oxygen-depleted solution were evaluated against data on biomass growthbiomass accumulation in waterlogged soils. Both traits were correlated with waterlogging tolerance in soil, but since it was easier to measure fluorescence, this method was further evaluated. A selection of F2 plants with... |

Organic strawberry production suffers from high yield losses caused by numerous fungal and bacterial diseases. Two of the most important diseases are the grey mould disease caused by Botrytis cinerea Pers. (teleomorph Botryotinia fuckeliana), and the bacterial angular leaf spot disease caused by Xanthomonas fragariae (Kennedy & King). Beside cultivation methods and organic plant protection measures, the development of resistant cultivars seems to be the most promising strategy in order to improve the productivity in organic strawberry cultivation. Therefore, we established resistance tests to determine resistant and susceptible strawberry cultivars and breeding selections. In a first run, 40 different cultivars and selections were tested for their... |

This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Diseases of plants cause significant losses in crop yield and quality. Plants contain a battery of genes whose role is to prevent pathogens invading. Their effective use in crop plants is very important in crop production and especially in chemical free cropping systems. Such genes are introduced into crop varieties by plant breeding. The new science of genomics may enable scientists to recognise all the resistance genes present in a plant. This will eventually allow plant breeders to more precisely and rapidly select useful resistant plants in their breeding programmes. Furthermore, genomics could enable effective deployment of these genes in cropping systems, so providing more durable... |

As in vegetable growing or grain cropping the seed quality is an important factor for the successful cultivation of medicinal plants and herbs. In spite of intensive efforts made by specialised seed producers there are recurring problems with important quality parameters (e.g. germination capacity, emergence or seed health). The lack of sufficient study results is typical for special purpose crops, also concerning the particular host-parasite relationship and its methodical verification. Few experiences with the improvement of seed quality of medicinal plants and herbs are available. The intention of the study is to test physical and biological methods of seed treat-ment for their practicability in medicinal plants and herb cultivation. Fundamental... |
